Located about 6 miles
South of Vernon, UT in southern Tooele County is the little-known east-west
Sheeprock Mountain Range. A rocky 4wd road up Harker Canyon led us to
a shady campsite by a small perennial stream. We were unfamiliar with
the area, as wildfires had driven us from our originally selected campsite
in another range. We hiked the tallest of the nearby peaks which probably
reached no higher than 9,000 ft. In Harker Canyon there are several dilapidated
structures that appear to be the remains of a mining community. Any readers
who have information on this area are encouraged to share it with us.
The community must have been of some significant size as we found ruins
and equipment even away from roads and trails.
