Mt.
Nebo Scenic Area Utah and Juab Counties, Utah
Jim Drysdale, Dugway, UT
Spent a beautiful
Sunday afternoon driving and hiking up along the Mt Nebo Scenic Loop.
Nebo, 11,877 ft., stands as the tallest mountain in the Wasatch. The
loop runs along the back side (eastern side) of Nebo - going from
Payson to Nephi - and then closes off along the I-15 corridor.
As one can see,
this is primetime for fall foliage viewing.
I was also enjoying
our brand new Subaru Forrester as it effortlessly cruised up the steep
grades. Had the Robert Earl Keen CD cranked up, windows down… It's
been over 13 years since we've had a new vehicle, so it feels pretty
good to be cruising around in something new.
Here's
a little fun geology. These two shots are of an outcropped area of
conglomerate showing a Bryce NP-like example of erosional forces -
right there in the Wasatch - though on a much smaller scale. Also,
one such cosmic question to ponder… Does the Wasatch represent the
end of the Rockies or the beginning of the Great Basin, or somewhere
in between? Or does anybody care…?
These views are from a spectacular overlook directly to the east of
Nebo. From this vantage the mountain is very much in your face and
only separated by a huge valley that drops a couple thousand feet
into the foreground.
Finally, this view shows Nebo's less spectacular (but impressive nonetheless)
western slope, taken from the town of Mona. I am sure that the resident
population of roosters get more than enough time to sleep-in in this
little town.
Better
check out the fall colors soon because in a few weeks it'll all be
gone. Have fun but watch out for the gapers up there.
