A BLM sign directs
the curious driver east from state road 6 to the Paul Bunyan's Woodpile
trailhead. The trail is easy hiking, about a half mile, to the foot of
a steep hillside adorned with fantastic lava remnants resembling a gargantuan
stack of firewood.
The area was burned
in a recent wildfire, which gives the landscape a stark and barren look.
The season's first snowstorm added to the surreal atmosphere.
On this adventure,
we were accompanied by our daughters. Here is a picture of them at the
base of the "woodpile". Above them is an unusual arch. Notice
the size of the formation in relation to the kids in the photograph.
We made our way around
the woodpile and climbed up to the "arch" for a closer look.
Little Sahara
Our next stop was
only a few miles south, at Little Sahara. This ancient remnant of Lake
Bonneville shoreline is now a paradise for ATV enthusiasts. On this cold,
wintery day, the die-hards were still actively at play on their vehicles.
It looked like a lot of fun and made us wish we, too, were equipped with
those expensive toys.
This vast expanse
of fine sand is not entirely dominated by ATV's. The western end of the
park is off limits to ATV traffic to preserve its pristine beauty. On
a warmer day, we hope to return to the less-frequented area for more photos.
Many serious and fatal
injuries occur at Little Sahara every year, particularly during Spring
Break and Memorial Day weekend, when there are literally thousands of
riders competing for space. The lonely "pedestrian" would be
a fool to wander here at such a time.
Clear
Lake
Clear Lake Migratory
Bird Refuge is south of Delta off state road 257. Late November is not
the time to see large numbers of birds, like Snow Geese. But in March,
the area hosts thousands of Snow Geese and over a hundred other species
of migratory birds. We'll aim to return when the spring migration is in
full swing.
